Casual Debate Notes

I know, why don't I just tackle the debate one point at a time? Here's the transcript I will be quoting from–I watched the second half of the debate from a bar in DUMBO, and then I watched it again at home on when CNN re-ran it at 1am.

Some quick swipes:

BUSH: My opponent said this war is a matter of intelligence and law enforcement. No, this war is a matter of using every asset at our disposal to keep the American people protected.

Oh yeah, because throwing everything we have at Iraq is working out soooo well. It's a perfect example of how Bush believes he's on the side of right and as such can do no wrong.

Next, gay marriage; here's Bush last night:

BUSH: But as we respect someone's rights, and as we profess tolerance, we shouldn't change — or have to change — our basic views on the sanctity of marriage. I believe in the sanctity of marriage. I think it's very important that we protect marriage as an institution, between a man and a woman.

I proposed a constitutional amendment. The reason I did so was because I was worried that activist judges are actually defining the definition of marriage, and the surest way to protect marriage between a man and woman is to amend the Constitution.

Does anyone else remember when Bush went on Larry King Live in 2000 and said he would leave the question of gay marriage to the states? Flip, my friends, then flop.

Bush last night:

BUSH: What he's asking me is, will I have a litmus test for my judges? And the answer is, no, I will not have a litmus test. I will pick judges who will interpret the Constitution, but I'll have no litmus test.

Bush after the Newdow decision:
block|
[W]e need common-sense judges who understand that our rights were derived from God. Those are the kind of judges I intend to put on the bench.

Bush on his faith last night:
block|
First, my faith plays a lot — a big part in my life. And that's, when I answering that question, what I was really saying to the person was that I pray a lot. And I do.

And my faith is a very — it's very personal.
|block
Um, that's patently bullshit. Bush's faith is anything but personal.

Finally, my vote for the Quote Of The Debate?
block|
But I'm mindful in a free society that people can worship if they want to or not.

Paging Dr. Freud?
